A Bond Like No Other is Mother and Son {Kristin & Leium}

I met Kristin last year when we both discovered Senegence (best. makeup. ever). She was one of the gorgeous women I got to do headshots for. And now I had the pleasure of photographing her and her handsome son Leium over Easter weekend!

We were a little worried about the weather because Thursday night it was so cold I had to put gloves on my kiddos. But this is Spring in Iowa…so of course three days later we hit 80 degrees! We really had a perfectly beautiful afternoon at the Bickelhaupt Arboretum in Clinton, Iowa. While there are still a lot of “naked” branches, we found a beautiful field of blooming daffodils and of course the gorgeous cherry blossoms.

As soon as I met Leium I knew the shoot would be fun one. He is not shy in the least and quite literally danced through the arboretum. He is such a happy kid and always has a huge smile on his face. I can tell he really enjoys being goofy and having fun. I gave him the opportunity to make up a silly story to make mom laugh and I’m pretty sure he didn’t disappoint. This talented little dude is already a writer and animator, which is super cool. Leium is one of a kind and I know his mama is very proud of him. It definitely shows in their photos!

I can definitely say, this session got me very excited for the busy photography season ahead!

It's never too early to teach your kids about their Earth

Happy Earth Day!

We started our day with an early morning walk through Clinton’s beautiful Bickelhaupt Arboretum. We are so lucky to have this little gem in our community! I know my son Bennett has been learning a lot about plants at preschool this month so it was fun to take him through there and show him the many budding flowers. He told us all about how plants grow and we looked for bees and butterflies. A lot of people are scared of bees and I want to make sure my boys know that they are not so scary. As long as we respect them and give them their space, they won’t hurt us! That’s true with most things in nature.

I was thinking of ways that I could teach my kids to help take care of our planet and compiled a short list of ideas. I’d love to know your ideas as well, please share in the comments!

  1. Turn off lights when you leave the room.

  2. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.

  3. Take a bag on your walk so you can pick up trash along the way.

  4. Grow your own vegetables. Contact the Ericksen Center in Clinton for information on our community garden!

  5. Recycle bottles, cans and paper.

This is why I love Golden Hour...

You may have heard of Golden Hour, and you may not have. So… let me tell you bout my best friend! Golden hour is the most gorgeous light of the day and trust me when I say, you want it for your own photo shoot! When is it you ask? It’s the one hour of the day that the sun is lowest in the sky. And actually, there are 2 golden hours every day - immediately after sunrise and immediately before sunset. It’s very flattering and soft, natural, glowy light that is perfect for portraits. Sometimes people think it’s about the actual sunset in the sky, but it’s really not. It’s about the sun’s position in the sky and the light it creates.

The Totten family had their Fall photo shoot during this magic hour and you can tell just how perfect the light is in their photos! Today’s throwback blog post is going back to Fall, my favorite time of the year, during my favorite time of the day, with some of my favorite family photos from 2018! Enjoy!
